The union between Christ and His people that Saul/Paul first glimped in Jesus' rebuke, "Why do you persecute ME?" operates in two directions. Jesus counts His peoples' suffering as belonging to Himself. And He counts His own suffering and death as belonging to His people:
"I have been crucified with Christ." (Galatians 2:20)
"All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death." (Romans 6)
