This word of the Lord through Isaiah is not actually delivered to the nations; it is pronounced against the nations but in the ears of the people of Judah and Jerusalem. In a general sense the message is similar to that in the first part of Isaiah (chaps. 1 — 12): salvation belongs only to the Lord, so he alone is the One to be trusted. The denunciation of the nations therefore includes comforting asides to Judah (e.g., 14:1 - 2) and ends with the deliverance of the people of God (chaps. 26 — 27).

Isaiah 13 is an oracle against Babylon. Because in Isaiah’s time the primary military threat was Assyria and not Babylon, many critics think that this chapter is a later interpolation, written a century and a half later (about 550 B. C.) when Babylon had not only risen to supremacy but was already in decline, threatened by the rising Medo - Persian Empire (see 13:17). But that view is too skeptical.

The introduction to the oracle unambiguously affirms that Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw this vision (13:1). Moreover, Isaiah 39 shows that even in Isaiah’s day, though Babylon was not an immediate threat like Assyria, it was already a rising power. Perhaps more important yet, Babylon’s history went back all the way to the Tower of Babel (Gen. 10:9 - 10; 11:1 - 9) and thus could serve as a symbol of all nations that defy the God of Israel — a symbolism that persists even in the New Testament (e.g., Rev. 17 — 18), long after historic Babylon is in eclipse. The ultimate collapse of “Babylon” takes place when “Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and of the Abominations of the Earth,” who is “drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus” (Rev. 17:5 - 6), is obliterated in the triumphant dawning of the reign of the Lord God Almighty (Rev. 19:6), the rule of him who is called &ldquo ;Faithful and True” and whose name is “the Word of God” (Rev. 19:11, 13).

Note three features of this oracle. (a) Once again the “day of the LORD” (Isa. 13:6) is bound up not only with the Lord’s coming, but with his coming in judgment. For those opposed to the living God, it is “a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger” (13:9). (b) Typical of Hebrew poetry, this day is associated with celestial signs; it is as if all nature has to join in with these events, for their significance is no less than cosmic (13:10; cf. Acts 2:20). (c) The heart of the sin that must be overthrown is arrogance (13:11, 19).

Copyright 2008 D.A.

February 25

6:30 p.m.

Seven Rivers Sanctuary

Nursery for children ages 0-4

Program for children grades K-2

Ash Wednesday begins the season of the Church Year known as Lent, which begins forty days prior to Easter and is characterized by a focus on repentance, fasting, prayer, and the needs of others. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ—His suffering and His sacrifice, His life, death, burial and resurrection. This first day of Lent reminds Christians of the words of Jesus in Matthew 16:24, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." The way to Easter is the way of the cross. As the first step in the Lenten journey the Ash Wednesday service invites us to acknowledge our mortality, our sinfulness and our dependence upon the grace of God.

We encourage all that are able to fast on Ash Wednesday leading up to the Ash Wednesday service as the Lord's Supper is served.

A unique feature of this service is the marking of the forehead with ashes in the sign of the cross (imposition of ashes). Since the 10th century this practice has been used to symbolize the frailty of our human existence and the 'dust and debris' in our lives (thus the name Ash Wednesday).

We hope you'll join us as we begin the Lenten season looking forward to its culmination on Easter Sunday morning as we worship our risen Savior.

NLOTH

tons of thoughts after listening to No Line stream almost all the way thru at myspace... while returning email

so many good ones....
loved this line from "Gotta go crazy" or somehting like that:
Everybody needs to cry or needs to spit
(LOVE the way bono gets this next part out)
Every sweet tooth needs just a little hit
Every beauty needs to go out with an idiot
How can you stand next to the truth and not see it
Oh, a change of heart comes slow

Often when a person is hurt they'll express it in anger. There you go.

What did I think of it?
Random thoughts:
1.) The writing was not engaging... to me. So that was a struggle. But it could be that I've been reading alot of Flannery O'Connor and EVERYBODY's writing pales to her.

2.) The main character entered the book struggling with what many people struggle with... a view of an unhappy God who is an angry taskmaster. I, like the author, grieve when I see this... in my heart or in others.

3.) The whole embodied God the Father and God the Holy Spirit simply seemed unbiblical to me, not to mention cheesy. Some might say I just didn't like that they were both female. Maybe. But I didn't like God the Father any more when He morphed from Big African American Lady to Cool White Guy with Ponytail. Some may say I'm just simple-minded and the Scriptures say that only one member of the Trinity is embodied, yet the Father and Spirit are knowable... and I know them and have experienced them.

If you have not read
Desiring God
The Pleasures of God
Knowing God
The Holiness of God

read those first... they show you a happy and holy Triune God who reveals Himself to us with a depth & strength that leads to intimacy that--forgive me--cheesy stuff cannot.

More on The Shack some pro some con:
1. abbreviated Review by
2. LONG review
3. Reading the Shack in Good Faith
seems like helpful balance..
<img width='1' height='1' I forgot to move clocks last nite!!

But I'm glad... Bcauuse it has given me a chance to seriously, sincerely, and happily say THANKS to God... For you!

Bebe, I have 4 other people asleep right now who sadly have learned what you know... That Rob can hurt you like few others. I look back, on my growing up AND on yday, and see how my words and gestures and actions hurt those I claim to love. I am not despairing... I know Jesus has borne my sin and "my chains are off my heart is free". And I also know that I'm realizing more what exactly He paid, in terms of my hurting people.

Bebe, you were a great mother to me in childhood....
Going to my All-Star games, you always helped me "get into" what we we were doing. Buying 25 Summit candy bars is my biggest memory.
I remember the tenderness you showed to me when I finally got up the courage to ask if you could take me to a dermatologist for my acne. You taking me and terry and clint (and letting us each bring a friend!) to grandma's each summer. Looking back on you doing that by yourself floors me. Thank you!

Parenting is so hard! I am seeing for myself right now. I have zero memories of you ever communicating that I was a bother to you or that you were ashamed of me. When I look at my own silent communications to my children I cannot say the same thing. And when I think of how I treated Terry & Clint--my brothers & your sons--oh, how my heart breaks for what that must've been like for you. It includes our justification before God, but
the term "acceptance" in the Greek means more than that. It signifies that
we are the objects of divine complacence, nay, even of divine delight. How
marvellous that we, worms, mortals, sinners, should be the objects of
divine love! But it is only "in the beloved." Some Christians seem to be
accepted in their own experience, at least, that is their apprehension.
When their spirit is lively, and their hopes bright, they think God
accepts them, for they feel so high, so heavenly-minded, so drawn above
the earth! But when their souls cleave to the dust, they are the victims
of the fear that they are no longer accepted. If they could but see that
all their high joys do not exalt them, and all their low despondencies do
not really depress them in their Father's sight, but that they stand
accepted in One who never alters, in One who is always the beloved of God,
always perfect, always without spot or wrinkle, or any such thing, how
much happier they would be, and how much more they would honour the
Saviour! Rejoice then, believer, in this: thou art accepted "in the
beloved." Thou lookest within, and thou sayest, "There is nothing
acceptable here!" But look at Christ, and see if there is not everything
acceptable there. Thy sins trouble thee; but God has cast thy sins behind
his back, and thou art accepted in the Righteous One. Thou hast to fight
with corruption, and to wrestle with temptation, but thou art already
accepted in him who has overcome the powers of evil. The devil tempts
thee; be of good cheer, he cannot destroy thee, for thou art accepted in
him who has broken Satan's head. It matters not how much we may have sinned, we may ask and
expect pardon. It signifies nothing how poor we are, we may plead his
promise that he will provide all things needful. We have permission to
approach his throne at all times-in midnight's darkest hour, or in
noontide's most burning heat. We are not
our own, we are bought with a price-let us recognize the rights of the
redeeming blood. The soldier follows his captain, the servant obeys his
master, much more must we follow our Redeemer, to whom we are a purchased
possession. We are not true to our profession of being Christians, if we
question the bidding of our Leader and Commander. Submission is our duty,
cavilling is our folly. Often might our Lord say to us as to Peter, "What
is that to thee? Follow thou me." Wherever Jesus may lead us, he goes
before us. If we know not where we go, we know with whom we go. With such
a companion, who will dread the perils of the road? The journey may be
long, but his everlasting arms will carry us to the end. The presence of
Jesus is the assurance of eternal salvation, because he lives, we shall
live also. We should follow Christ in simplicity and faith, because the
paths in which he leads us all end in glory and immortality. It is true
they may not be smooth paths-they may be covered with sharp flinty trials,
but they lead to the "city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker
is God." "All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep
his covenant." Let us put full trust in our Leader, since we know that,
come prosperity or adversity, sickness or health, popularity or contempt,
his purpose shall be worked out, and that purpose shall be pure, unmingled
good to every heir of mercy. We shall find it sweet to go up the bleak
side of the hill with Christ; and when rain and snow blow into our faces,
his dear love will make us far more blest than those who sit at home and
warm their hands at the world's fire.
To the top of Amana, to the dens of lions, or to the hills of leopards,
we will follow our Beloved.
Precious Jesus, draw us, and we will run after thee.

book by Sam Storms.
In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus, the hero, must sail his ship through dangerous waters near an island of Sirens. The Sirens were an evil, man-eating monster that entranced passersby with songs so beautiful that they could then control the thoughts and actions of the sailors, driving them to crash their boats on shore, and be devoured by the seductive beasts. Odysseus, being well aware of their powers, commands his crew to plug their ears, and chain him to the mast. You see, though he knew the dangers, he still longed to hear the Siren’s songs. And hear them he did: the Sirens even took the shape of his own wife, capturing all of his passions: heart, mind, soul, & strength. He was only restrained from redirecting the ship by the chains binding him to it’s mast. Yet, Odysseus survived the temptation of the Siren’s song, at least physically.

In another Greek myth, the Argonautica by Appolonius of Rhodes, our hero is Jason. On his journey home from his quest to find the ‘Golden Fleece’, he travels the same route as Ulysses, and also encounters the same threat. However, heading wise instruction, he brought with him the musician, Orpheus, who was renown for playing the lyre so beautifully that nothing could compare to his music. Instead of plugging their ears, and tying Jason to the mast, like Odysseus, Jason simply asked Orpheus to play his finest tune. Jason and his crew didn’t even notice the songs of the Sirens because they were entranced my music far more lovely: the songs of Orpheus.

RP: May you hear the freeing song of Jesus and find hope.

today my calendar brought up this reminder for Lent

Lent 2009
Groaning & waiting ... Here are abundance of precious promises, which exactly meet thy wants. Take this one: “He will not break the bruised reed, nor quench the smoking flax.” Doth not that suit thy case? A reed, helpless, insignificant, and weak, a bruised reed, out of which no music can come; weaker than weakness itself; a reed, and that reed bruised, yet, he will not break thee; but on the contrary, will restore and strengthen thee. Thou art like the smoking flax: no light, no warmth, can come from thee; but he will not quench thee; he will blow with his sweet breath of mercy till he fans thee to a flame. Wouldst thou glean another ear? “Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” What soft words! Thy heart is tender, and the Master knows it, and therefore he speaketh so gently to thee. Wilt thou not obey him, and come to him even now? Take another ear of corn: “Fear not, thou worm Jacob, I will help thee, saith the Lord and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.” How canst thou fear with such a wonderful assurance as this? Thou mayest gather ten thousand such golden ears as these! “I have blotted out thy sins like a cloud, and like a thick cloud thy transgressions.” Or this, “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Or this, “The Spirit and the Bride say, Come, and let him that is athirst come, and whosoever will let him take the water of life freely.” Our Master’s field is very rich; behold the handfuls. See, there they lie before thee, poor timid believer! Gather them up, make them thine own, for Jesus bids thee take them.
Be not afraid, only believe!
Grasp these sweet promises,
thresh them out by meditation
and type='text'>Walk On .... and Communion

I remember a time when I was struggling as I prepared for communion. It was a Friday and I was really NOT wanting to let go of a vicious attitude. Not just a harmful attitude but plans for destruction as well.

You should know that I think that to come to the table in a healthy manner means basically to say, "Jesus, I'm yours and you're mine. You've bought me. I will follow you wherever. And yes, my desires and plans in (insert whatever) are not from you. So I won't pursue them. Give me strength to walk with you. This is the real desire of my heart. The part of me that wants to run is emerging from my unbelief and brokenness... from my refusal to live in this hard "in between" time.

As I jogged and listened to Walk On and wrestled with my tired heart... images from Romans 8 kept coming to me

And love is not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring...
And love is not the easy thing....
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind

And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it's a long way off
And if your glass heart should crack
And for a second you turn back
Oh no, be strong

Walk on, walk on
What you got they can’t steal it
No they can’t even feel it
Walk on, walk on...
Stay safe tonight

You're packing a suitcase for a place none of us has been
A place that has to be believed to be seen
You could have flown away
A singing bird in an open cage
Who will only fly, only fly for freedom

Walk on, walk on
What you've got they can't deny it
Can’t sell it, can’t buy it
Walk on, walk on
Stay safe tonight

And I know it aches
And your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on

Home… hard to know what it is if you’ve never had one
Home… I can’t say where it is but I know I'm going home
That's where the hurt is

I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on

Leave it behind
You've got to leave it behind
All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you steal
All this you can leave behind
All that you reason
All that you sense
All that you speak
All you dress up
All that you scheme…

sabbatical

this blog is on sabbatical and will re-emerge in another format in a few months...
you should now book mark the blog i'm doing with Frank Matthews

Way to Go

Has sincerely been a delight to stand at 10am to lead us in worshipping God and have the sense that a good chunk of us are there and ready to go... ready to go to the throne together. From the beginning to seeing scores of people hanging (donut in hand) long after the service..... it was a great day together as a church family.

Many of you asked about the corporate prayer of confession. By God himself, it is not! How God thinks of us is not only more important but infinitely more important. Indeed, how we think of Him is of no importance except in so far as it is related to how he thinks of us. It is written that we shall 'stand before Him', shall appear, shall be inspected. The promise of glory is the promise, almost incredible and only possible by the work of Christ, that some of us, that any of us who really chooses, shall actually survive that examination, shall find approval, shall please God. To please God…to be a real ingredient in the divine happiness…to be loved by God, not merely pitied, but delighted in as an artist delights in his work or a father in a son—it seems impossible, a weight or burden of glory which our thoughts can hardly sustain. But so it is." --C S Lewis, The Weight of Glory

Internet Amazement... at what is available

Not sure how... but i stumbled across access to a lecture (audio, powerpoint & PDF) by a brilliant Christian, entitled:
Has Science Eliminated God? So we'll enter a time of renewal when we confess our sins, are reminded that He's removed our guilt, and celebrate with words and songs of celebration and assurance. Their insecurity shows itself in pride, a fierce defensive assertion of their own righteousness and defensive criticism of others. They come naturally to hate other cultural styles and other races in order to bolster their own security and discharge their suppressed anger. They cling desperately to legal, pharisaical righteousness, but envy, jealousy and other branches on the tree of sin grow out of their fundamental insecurity…it is often necessary to convince sinners (even sinful Christians) of the grace and love of God toward them, before we can get them to look at their problems. Then the vision of grace and the sense of God’s forgiving acceptance may actually cure most of the problems. This may account for Paul’s frequent fusing of justification and sanctification”. Children age 5 through grade 2 will have opportunity for children's church during the 2nd half of the service. (Thank you to Will Harrell and Pierre Delinois for leading.)

We're asking you to begin preparing now (whenever you read this) for Sunday at 10am when we gather for worship...

Why prepare? The Puritans used to call it "stoking the fire". You know what I mean... before you go to Chicago you read up on the Sears tower and Wrigley Field et al. Same idea... you prepare before you get somewhere, so that when you arrive, you are more quickly oriented and can move from "getting your bearings" to experiencing your surroundings.

Ways to prepare:
1. Read one or all the hymns/songs we're singing
2. Read one or all the prayers we're praying

Please be seated in the theater prior to 10:00. Even if we could do so, that would lead only to despair. The first world–centered love of our hearts can be expelled only by a new love and affection—for God and from God. The love of the world and the love of the Father cannot dwell together in the same heart. But the love of the world can be driven out only by the love of the Father. How?

Answer by author: In "The Pleasantness of Religion" J. Edwards explains that seeking pleasure without any checks or balances can actually boomerang to pain. Who hasn't been to a smorgasbord, only to waddle out muttering, "Why did I eat so much?" Edwards shows us the proper pursuit of pleasure. The sting of conscience can eclipse pleasure, but Christians may pursue pleasure "peaceably" and not in "slavish fear." We can enjoy sensory pleasure because we realize that God has made this world for us to enjoy and to savor, or as Edwards would put it, to relish. Edwards often uses the illustration of honey. We should enjoy its sweetness just as we should enjoy all of God's gifts.

This interview is from WORLD magazine... with an author who wrote book about J.Edwards teaching on the Bible's teaching about living here on earth with a vision of the physicality and reality of the new heavens and new earth of eternity.

"What is the Christian method? I end with a text. It is not, 'Set about imitating Christ, adopt His moral ethical teaching, and try to put it into practice'. It is not, 'Get away and become a monk or a hermit'. But just where you are in the midst of the world, with evil and sin rampant round and about you, and everybody and everything doing all they can to discourage you and to drag you down, just as and where you are, 'Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Take unto you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand the wiles of the devil.' It is not retreat, it is not escape, it is not attempting something that is impossible.
